Obituary for Kathleen "Kay" McGrath (Stuart)
Kathleen “Kay” McGrath entered eternal life on January 27, 2018. She was born in Manhattan on October 2, 1928 to David and Kathleen Stuart. She had many great stories about growing up in New York City, living through World War II and meeting the love of her life, Peter McGrath. She married Peter on January 3, 1948. She worked in her father’s grocery store and later for the New York Telephone Company. When her first child, Kathy was born, she became a stay at home mom. Her other children Pete, Kevin and Patty soon followed. The family relocated to Las Cruces in 1964 so that Peter could work on the Apollo Space Program. Their fifth child, Sharon, was born in Las Cruces.
Kay returned to work outside the home when her husband Peter passed away in 1975. She worked in real estate, retail, and later became the executive secretary at the Burger Time office where she worked for 20 years until her retirement at the age of 78. Kay then enjoyed spending time with her family, particularly taking care of grandkids, and great grandkids. “Nanny” as she was affectionately known to her grandchildren, helped care for them as children and enjoyed visiting with them as adults and provided valuable wisdom and advice. Making crocheted gifts was one of her talents and passions in life and there are many people that are blessed to have received one or more of her beautiful creations.
Kay was devoted to her Catholic faith and had a special devotion to the Blessed Mother and St. Jude. She found great comfort in attending mass, saying the Rosary, and spent a lot of her time praying for others. Peter and Kay, along with many other Las Cruces families helped establish Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents David and Kathleen; stepmother Ellen; her beloved brother Dave; her infant sister Joan; her husband Peter; her children Kathy, Pete, and Patty; and her daughter-in-law Sandra.
