Obituary for William James Moore

William James Moore
Bill was born in Kings County, Brooklyn, New York on December 1, 1943 to William Holland and Mary Elizabeth (Nugent) Moore and was the third of four children. His mom was a stay-at-home mom until the 1960’s and his dad worked in construction with Bill’s grandfather. The construction company, Moore Construction, was responsible for the construction of many of the city buildings in New York City. His grandfather came as a refugee to America from Ireland when Bill’s mom was a little girl. At the age of 4, Bill’s dad took him to Washington DC, to visit with his grandfather who was the Under Secretary of the Navy where Bill played on the White House Lawn.
Growing up, Bill spent many days at Ebbets Field, the home of the Brooklyn Dodgers or as many fans called them, the Brooklyn Bums. He also made several trips to the Polo Grounds, home of the Giants and into Yonkers, New York, home of the Yankees. The cost of a day game was .25 cents at any of the stadiums and it would cost a dime for the trains. At several of the games Bill and his friends would catch foul balls and wait until after the game was over for autographs. They were able to get autographs from Gil Hodges, Pee Wee Reese, Duke Snyder and Jackie Robinson. Since it was all about the game, Bill and his friends would then go home and play with the autographed balls. When he was a Senior in high school he worked on a co-op plan going to school and working for Smith & Barney Investment Company at 20 Broad St in New York City. Bill played basketball at the old Madison Square Garden when he was in high school in a city-wide basketball tournament and he also ran track at Madison Square Garden.
In 1961 Bill was drafted into the Army. Rather than going into the Army, he enlisted in the Air Force. Basic training was 16 weeks at Lackland AFB followed by 16 weeks at Amarillo AFB for Technical Training. He was then stationed at Holloman AFB, NM and was a Vietnam Veteran. Bill served as an Honor Guard for President Kennedy.
In the 70’s, Bill worked for General Dynamics at the Ratscat facility, where the Stealth Fighter/Bomber was developed. He was the property administrator and the security officer for security clearances.
Bill lived in Tularosa, where he was active for 20 years in the City Council, VFW, Elks Lodge, St. Francis de Paula Catholic Church, and owned & operated the J & J Mini Market. When he started gas was .49 cents a gallon and when he left it was $1.89. Bill was proud to call Tularosa his home.
Bill later moved to Rio Rancho, after leaving the store. He worked as a professional lobbyist for New Mexico and later joined Waste Management as Vice President. Later, he worked for Bernalillo County as the Solid Waste Director and then working for Cascade Engineering.
In May of 2016, Bill & his wife, Debbi, moved to Las Cruces and became actively involved in the community. Bill was a devout Catholic attending mass daily after his retirement.
Bill passed suddenly & unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 25th. He leaves to mourn, his beloved wife, Debbi; son Winston Moore & Ginger; daughter Karen Lawrence & Tom; son Tim Moore & Belle; daughter Michelle Moore & Gene; step-son David Blevins & Rachel and step-daughter Anita Tipton & Bobbi; sister Mary Ellen Beggins and brother-in-law David Reddout & Sherlene. He also leaves behind grandchildren, Staci Guerrerro (Gloria); Karey Flores (Freddy); Thomas & Todd (Katie) Lawrence; Nicholas, Nathan and Nolan Stogden, Jonathan Niemeyer, Tatum Dunn, Larry & Layla Blevins in addition to 9 great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins & several Godchildren. He adored each one of them.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, father & mother-in-law, brother Bobby Moore, sister Betty Rogers, nephew Michael Rogers & niece Barbara Beggins.
Funeral Services are being coordinated by Getz Funeral Home. Viewing will be held on Wednesday, October 3rd, 5:30-7:00pm at San Albino Church with Rosary to follow. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, October 4th, 11:00am at San Albino Church. Internment will be at Santa Fe National Cemetery with military honors on Friday, October 5th at 9:00am.
